About Me

Dr. Peter Faries is a highly respected figure in the field of vascular surgery, serving as System Chief of Vascular Surgery for the Mount Sinai Health System. He leads a team of 26 vascular surgeons across 10 hospitals, overseeing both clinical and academic endeavors. Additionally, he actively develops training and fellowship opportunities, fostering the next generation of skilled vascular surgeons. Currently, he directs one of the largest vascular training programs in the US, guiding over 22 residents and fellows.


Dr. Faries is a recognized expert in carotid artery disease treatment and prevention of stroke. He has significantly advanced minimally invasive vascular surgery, particularly percutaneous techniques that restore blood flow to the brain without the need for open surgery. He has internationally recognized expertise in percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stenting for carotid stenosis, renovascular hypertension, and lower extremity ischemia as well as performing endovascular treatments for thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections.


Beyond his surgical experience, Dr. Faries is a dedicated researcher. He oversees numerous clinical trials investigating novel treatments for vascular diseases. His NIH-supported laboratory and research team delve into the root causes of aortic aneurysms, exploring the therapeutic potential of stem cell therapy. Additionally, he has led translational research projects aimed at preventing stroke caused by carotid stenosis.  His research has integrated clinical treatment with radiological, pathological, and cognitive assessments. With over 12 peer-reviewed grants from prestigious institutions like NIH and NHLBI, Dr. Faries currently has led 77 clinical trials focused on innovative treatments for vascular diseases, 7 of which are currently enrolling patients.


Prior to joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Faries held leadership positions at renowned institutions. He served as Site Chief of Vascular Surgery and Associate Professor of Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. From 2002 to 2007, he was Chief of Endovascular Surgery for both Cornell-New York Hospital and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.


Dr. Faries' achievements have been recognized by numerous awards and honors. These include the Society for Vascular Surgery Lifeline Award (2003), the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society Educational Grant (2002), the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery Research Award (2000), The Mount Sinai Lifetime Achievement Award (2023) and the Outstanding Mentor Award (2013, 2019). His commitment to research extends beyond his own laboratory. He serves on the editorial board of 11 leading medical journals, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field. His prolific authorship includes over 290 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, 29 book chapters, and presentations at over 340 national, international, and regional scientific and medical meetings. He actively participates in 21 professional medical societies, holding elected officer positions in four including presidency of the Eastern Vascular Society and the New York Society for Vascular Surgery.


Dr. Faries began his medical career at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, completing his residency in general surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center. He further honed his expertise through a fellowship in vascular surgery at Harvard Medical School/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He joined Mount Sinai in 2000, embarking on a journey of impactful clinical practice, research, and mentorship.
