About Me

I am an experienced, board-certified, fellowship-trained hip and knee replacement surgeon, and the Chief of Joint Replacement Surgery at Mount Sinai Health System.  The Mount Sinai Health System began as a single hospital, The Jews’ Hospital, that was founded in 1852 and opened in 1855. In 1864, the hospital became formally nonsectarian and in 1866 changed its name to The Mount Sinai Hospital. Our integrated health system is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the United States.

I am very fortunate to be part of an outstanding group of doctors that make up the Leni & Peter W. May Department of Orthopaedic Surgery here at Mount Sinai.  It is of no surprise to me that in the 2022 U.S. News and World Report Ranking, The Mount Sinai Hospital was rated #8 in the country for Orthopaedics!

Providing my patients with compassionate, detail-oriented, advanced medical care is my number one priority. While training as a surgeon I never forgot how to be a well-rounded physician. I enjoy taking my time with patients and trying to figure out what the best treatment plan is for each particular problem. I am always available for my patients - both before and after surgery. In many instances surgery can be avoided. When surgery is needed, I offer a wide variety of minimally invasive procedures.

My colleagues often talk about how I enjoy tackling some of the most difficult cases out there. I have an interest in complex primary and revision surgery of the hip and knee. I also have expertise and interest in the treatment of infected hip and knee implants. As a member of the Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS) and European Bone and Joint Infection Society (EBJIS) I am intimately involved with the newest methods of preventing and treating periprosthetic joint infections. When needed, I work in conjunction with other members of the Mount Sinai Hospital's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in order to provide the most comprehensive & highly specialized treatment plan.

I am a big believer in patient education preoperatively. Our center's Patient Education Center is first class! I chose to work with a top-notch team of anesthesiologists, pain management specialists, plastic surgeons, rheumatologists, cardiologists, physical therapists, physician assistants, nurses and social workers who share my philosophies on patient care. Some you will meet prior to surgery and others afterwards. We are all here to help our patients - it's what makes us happy!

Lastly, I am all about your well-being and safety. As a member of the American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) I am always on top of new developments in the field of joint replacement. I regularly review articles submitted for publication to several of the most prestigious journals in our field. Serving on the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons' (AAOS) Patient Safety Committee (4-year term ending in 2012) and the Steering Committee of the 2012 AAOS Patient Safety Summit, I am always searching for the best ways to keep you safe during the perioperative period. I cannot stress the importance of preventing avoidable complications and doing everything we can do diminish the risk of surgical site infection. I am a regular speaker on periprosthetic infection prevention and treatment at local and international meetings.

Doing research and teaching residents at Mount Sinai Hospital, one of the best orthopaedic surgery programs in the country, is one of many reasons that I make sure I always keep up with the latest advances in my field. In 2008 and 2014, my residents awarded me the Teacher of the Year Award.

Thanks to YOU, my patients, I have been voted on by my peers to be in New York Magazine's Best Doctors issues every year since 2013. I have been featured every year since 2013 in the New York Times SUPERDOCTORS issue. I have also been chosen by Castle Connolly to be on the list of Regional Top Doctors, America's Top Doctors, & Top Doctors New York Metro Area. Most recently, I was awarded a certificate from VITALS as a Most Compassionate Doctor.

Thank you, and please contact me if you think I can be of any help!
